The goalkeeper who broke records and faced a literal beach ball
In short: Pepe Reina didn't just guard the net; he redefined the standards of reliability for Liverpool FC. From breaking long-standing club records to facing surreal stadium hazards, his career is a masterclass in consistency, punctuated by high-stakes penalty saves and a unique family legacy.
Born into a footballing dynasty as the son of Miguel Reina—a legendary Barcelona and Atlético Madrid keeper—Pepe Reina began his journey in La Masia. At age 18, he first played professionally with Barcelona during 2000; later, he joined Villarreal and assisted their inaugural UEFA Champions League qualification by 2004.
His move to Liverpool in 2005 under Rafael Benítez marked a period of unprecedented dominance. Reina quickly became a record-breaker: he set the club record for successive Premier League clean sheets (reaching eight) and became the fastest goalkeeper in the club's history to reach 50 clean sheets, achieving the milestone in just 92 league outings. His reliability was so pronounced that he won the Premier League Golden Glove award three consecutive times between 2006 and 2009.
However, his career was defined by as much drama as it was stability. He faced surreal moments, such as a goal being deflected past him via a beach ball thrown from the crowd in October 2009. He also navigated high-pressure scenarios, including saving three out of four penalties in the 2006 FA Cup final and facing a burglary at his home shortly after a standout Champions League performance.
After nearly a decade as Liverpool's first choice, Reina moved through Italy with Napoli and Milan before finishing his career at Como in 2024. Throughout his journey, he remained a pillar for the Spanish national team, contributing to their historic World Cup win in 2010 and multiple European titles.
