How Pete Alonso Became the Most Prolific Power Hitter in Mets History
In short: Pete Alonso redefined the New York Mets record books through sheer power. From a record-shattering rookie campaign to becoming the franchise's all-time leader in home runs, the first baseman has consistently delivered in high-pressure moments. His journey from a Tampa high school prospect to a perennial All-Star is a masterclass in consistency.
Born in 1994, Pete Alonso emerged as a transformative force for the New York Mets immediately upon his 2019 debut. He set a major league record for rookies by hitting 53 home runs that season, earning him the National League Rookie of the Year Award. His ability to clear the fences was evident early, as he became the first player since 1900 to record 11 extra-base hits within his first 10 career games. By the time he hit his 253rd career home run in August 2025, he had surpassed Darryl Strawberry to become the Mets' all-time leader in home runs.
Alonso's impact extends beyond the regular season. He is a five-time MLB All-Star and a two-time winner of the Home Run Derby, having claimed the title in 2019 and 2021. His clutch performance in the 2024 postseason cemented his reputation, as he delivered a decisive three-run home run in the ninth inning of a winner-take-all game against the Milwaukee Brewers. This feat marked the first time in major league history that a player hit a go-ahead blast while their team was behind during the final frame of such a critical playoff contest.
Throughout his tenure, Alonso has demonstrated remarkable durability and offensive output. In both 2024 and 2025, he appeared in every single game of the 162-game schedule. His 2025 season was particularly decorated, as he led the National League with 41 doubles and secured his first Silver Slugger award. Despite his immense production, his career has been marked by significant contract negotiations, including declining a seven-year, $158 million extension in 2024 and opting out of his deal following the 2025 season to enter free agency.
