How a creator of talking vegetables lost his empire and found a new mission
In short: Phil Vischer built a media juggernaut with VeggieTales, using computer-animated vegetables to teach biblical lessons. Yet, rapid expansion and legal battles led to bankruptcy and the loss of his own creation. Today, he navigates a post-Christian landscape, using podcasts and streaming to explore theology, history, and culture.
Born in 1966, Phil Vischer co-founded Big Idea Productions in the late 1980s with Mike Nawrocki. They chose vegetables like Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber as protagonists because they were easier to animate than humans. The series became a massive success, earning millions annually by the late 1990s. However, the company faced financial ruin after producing the feature film Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie and entering a protracted legal dispute with HiT Entertainment. A jury initially awarded HiT $11 million in 2003, forcing Big Idea into Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Although the verdict was later overturned on appeal, the studio was sold to Classic Media in 2004.
Following the collapse, Vischer viewed the experience as a wake-up call regarding his leadership. He founded Jellyfish Labs to pursue a new vision, aiming to create a Christian-focused media environment. His subsequent project, What's in the Bible, was a 13-DVD series released between 2010 and 2014 that sought to explain scripture with the educational ambition of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos. He later launched the streaming service MrPhil.TV in 2020, providing a platform for his independent work after years of working under contract for the VeggieTales franchise.
Beyond animation, Vischer has become a prominent voice in American cultural discourse through The Holy Post Podcast, which he has hosted since 2012. Alongside co-hosts Skye Jethani and Christian Taylor, he critiques how Christians engage with politics and public life. His commentary often addresses complex social issues, including a 2020 video on systemic racism that drew significant attention. While he briefly returned to the VeggieTales franchise in 2019 to revive the series at TBN, he and Nawrocki departed in 2021 after being denied greater creative control. Today, Vischer continues to produce content from his base in Wheaton, Illinois, maintaining his focus on faith-based media and social critique.
