In short: Nestled between two lakes in British Columbia, Penticton is often translated as a place to stay forever. This name actually refers to the year-round, steady flow of the Okanagan River. Beyond its unique geography, this city has evolved from a cattle ranching hub into a year-round destination for sports and culture.

The name Penticton originates from the Okanagan word snpintktn. While often interpreted as a permanent home, it specifically describes the Okanagan River's consistent flow between Okanagan Lake and Skaha Lake. Unlike other regional streams that dry up during summer, this river runs year-round. The area was originally settled by the Syilx people, who referred to the site as Phthauntac, or the ideal meeting place.

European settlement began in 1866 when Thomas Ellis arrived to establish a cattle empire and plant fruit trees. The community grew as a center for fruit distribution and transportation, aided by sternwheelers on the lakes and the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Incorporated as a district in 1908 and a city in 1948, Penticton eventually developed into a hub for recreation, hosting events like the Ironman Canada race and the Penticton Peach Festival.

Today, the city is known for its semi-arid climate, which provides hot summers and the mildest winters of any non-coastal city in Canada. Its geography supports diverse activities, from skiing at the nearby Apex Mountain Resort to rock climbing at Skaha Bluffs. With a population of 36,885 as of the 2021 census, the city balances its historical roots in agriculture with a modern focus on tourism, sports, and community events.

The city's infrastructure reflects its growth, featuring the $73 million South Okanagan Events Centre, which hosts major concerts and the Penticton Vees ice hockey team. Despite its dry climate, the region experiences significant cloud cover in winter due to temperature inversions, making it one of the cloudiest places in Canada during December and January, contrasting sharply with its sunny summer months.
