In short: While many travelers associate Phuket with its famous beaches, the provincial capital offers a distinct cultural narrative. As one of Thailand's oldest cities, it served as a vital gateway for Chinese immigrants. Today, its architecture and culinary scene reflect a unique, centuries-old fusion of Chinese and European influences.

Phuket City, located 862 kilometers south of Bangkok, serves as the capital of Phuket province. While the city municipality holds a population of 71,284, the broader metropolitan area is home to approximately 430,000 people. Since 2005, the city has experienced steady population growth, and it was officially elevated to city status in 2004. Despite the prominence of Buddhism and the presence of numerous Buddhist temples, the city is notably diverse, hosting a higher number of registered mosques than Buddhist Wats, alongside Hindu temples featuring statues of Ganesha and Brahma.

The city's historical prosperity was built on the foundation of the tin mining industry. This wealth is still visible in the 'Phuket Old Town' district, a 2.7 square kilometer area encompassing 210 rai. The architecture here is defined by the 'Sino-Portuguese' style, characterized by narrow, deep buildings featuring intricate tiles, perforated windows, and doors that blend Chinese and European aesthetics. These heritage structures are spread across ten streets, including Klang, Phang Nga, and Soi Rammanee. Local authorities have been working since 2019 to secure World Heritage Site status for this district through UNESCO.

Beyond its architecture, the city is recognized for its culinary heritage. In 2015, it became the first city in Southeast Asia to be designated a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, honoring its unique, multicultural food history. Visitors navigating the area typically rely on songthaews—pink vehicles for local transit within the Old Town and blue ones for connections to the island's beach resorts. For those arriving by air, the city is located 36 kilometers southeast of Phuket International Airport, which provides an hourly bus service to the town center.
