In short: Pierre-Esprit Radisson was a restless adventurer who navigated the brutal politics of colonial North America. After being captured and adopted by the Mohawk, he eventually pivoted from French service to help the English establish the Hudson’s Bay Company, forever altering the continent's economic landscape through his knowledge of the wilderness.

Born around 1640, likely in France, Radisson arrived in New France by 1651. His early life was defined by a harrowing encounter with the Mohawk, who captured him near his home in Trois-Rivières. Rather than executing him, his captors adopted him into a local family. He endured intense ritual torture before eventually escaping to Dutch-controlled Fort Orange in 1653, eventually making his way back to Canada.

By the late 1650s, Radisson began exploring the interior alongside his partner, Médard Chouart des Groseilliers. Their expeditions took them to Lake Nipissing and the upper Mississippi River valley. However, their relationship with French authorities soured when they were fined and had their furs seized for operating without a government license. This betrayal pushed the pair to offer their expertise to the English, a move that would prove pivotal for imperial expansion in the North.

The duo's reports on the immense wealth of fur resources in the interior directly inspired the 1670 creation of the Hudson’s Bay Company. Radisson’s career remained fluid; he later founded Moose Factory in 1671 and even returned to French service for a time, participating in naval operations in Guinea and Tobago. By 1681, he was back in Quebec, though he later led raids against English interests in Hudson Bay. Despite his shifting allegiances, he ended his life as a pensioner of the Hudson’s Bay Company, dying around 1710.
