Pingliang: The Ancient Chinese City That Shaped Taoism and Turkic History
In short: Nestled on the Loess Plateau, Pingliang is far more than a regional hub in Gansu province. Established in 376 AD, this city serves as a gateway to sacred Taoist mountains and holds a surprising connection to the origins of the First Turkic Khaganate, marking it as a crossroads of profound cultural significance.
Pingliang, a prefecture-level city in eastern Gansu, occupies a unique position on the Loess Plateau. With elevations spanning from 890 to 2,957 metres, the city center sits at approximately 1,400 metres above sea level. This geography dictates its monsoon-influenced, humid continental climate, characterized by cold, dry winters and warm, humid summers. The region experiences an annual mean temperature of 9.28 °C, with most rainfall concentrated between June and September.
The city is deeply intertwined with spiritual and historical narratives. It is famous for the nearby Kongtong Mountains, which are considered sacred to Taoism. According to legend, these peaks served as the meeting site between the Yellow Emperor and the immortal Guangchengzi. Beyond mythology, the city’s historical footprint is significant; ancient texts such as the Book of Sui and the Tongdian identify Pingliang as the ancestral home of the Ashina clan, the group responsible for establishing the First Turkic Khaganate.
Pingliang has also been a cradle for notable historical figures. It is the birthplace of Huangfu Mi, the author of the foundational text on acupuncture, as well as the novelist Niu Sengru and the Southern Song dynasty generals Wu Jie and Wu Lin. Today, the city remains a vital transit point, connected to major urban centers like Xi'an and Lanzhou via the G22 Qingdao–Lanzhou Expressway and China National Highway 312, bridging its ancient legacy with modern infrastructure.
