The rock concert filmed in total silence
In short: In 1971, Pink Floyd performed a live set in the ruins of Pompeii with no audience present. Director Adrian Maben sought to capture a reaction to the spectacle of Woodstock by stripping away the crowd, leaving only the band's music to interact with the ancient Roman amphitheatre.
The project began when filmmaker Adrian Maben initially proposed a film featuring Pink Floyd's music over paintings by artists like René Magritte. When the band rejected this concept, Maben traveled to Naples and discovered the Pompeii amphitheatre. He was struck by the silence of the deserted ruins and decided that the natural ambient sounds would provide a superior backdrop for the music compared to traditional concert films like 'Woodstock' or 'Gimme Shelter'.
Securing the location required logistical persistence. Maben collaborated with Ugo Carputi, an architecture professor at the University of Naples, who persuaded local authorities to close the site for six days in October 1971. The production faced immediate technical hurdles: the band's touring equipment arrived from London but found insufficient power at the site. The crew eventually had to run a 750-metre cable from the local town hall to provide electricity.
The resulting film, released in 1972, was a unique hybrid of live performance and montage. While portions were recorded live on an 8-track recorder (later upgraded to 16-track), other segments were filmed in a Paris studio or featured stock footage of volcanic mud and Roman mosaics. Despite mixed critical reception regarding its length and 'scattershot' interviews, the film has endured as a landmark of concert cinematography, recently receiving a 4K restoration in 2025 that reached number one on the UK album charts.
The production also highlighted the band's meticulousness; they insisted on using their regular touring gear to ensure an authentic sound. While some critics dismissed the film as 'dull' or 'hokey,' others have hailed it as a masterpiece of cinematography, with some reviewers calling it their favorite concert film of all time.
