In short: Since 1998, airlines have transformed standard aircraft into immersive Pokémon experiences. What began as a domestic Japanese promotional tool has evolved into a global phenomenon, with international carriers now painting entire fleets with iconic characters. These flying galleries offer passengers themed interiors, specialized amenities, and a unique, high-altitude brand experience.

The concept of the Pokémon Jet originated with All Nippon Airways in 1998, shortly after the release of the first Nintendo Game Boy games. The airline unveiled two aircraft, a Boeing 747-400 and a 767-300, featuring a variety of the then-151 known Pokémon. These early jets were designed to capitalize on the massive popularity of the franchise, and the success of the initiative prompted the airline to expand the fleet, including a version specifically for North American routes in 1999.

Over the decades, the design philosophy shifted from ensemble casts to more focused themes. In 2020, Solaseed Air introduced an aircraft featuring only Exeggutor, marking the first time a jet focused on a single species. Other airlines followed suit with specific character liveries, such as Skymark Airlines' Pikachu-themed jets and Air Do's Vulpix-inspired design. The experience extends well beyond the exterior paint; passengers often encounter themed headrests, flight attendant uniforms, and specialized in-flight refreshments.

The trend eventually moved beyond Japan. In 2022, Singapore-based Scoot became the first non-Japanese airline to launch a Pokémon-themed aircraft. China Airlines, T'way Air, and Garuda Indonesia have since joined the movement, utilizing various models like the Airbus A321neo and Boeing 787. By 2023, All Nippon Airways resumed its own program after a seven-year hiatus, introducing new designs like the Eevee Jet. These collaborations demonstrate how intellectual property can reshape commercial aviation marketing, turning routine travel into a branded, collectible experience for fans worldwide.
