How a Belgian forest became a permanent piece of British imperial soil
In short: Deep within the Ypres Salient lies Ploegsteert Wood Military Cemetery, a site where the earth itself was ceded to the United Kingdom in perpetuity. This burial ground, born from the scattered graves of individual regiments, stands as a solemn testament to the immense sacrifices made during the First World War.
The origins of Ploegsteert Wood Military Cemetery trace back to December 1914, when the Somerset Light Infantry Cemetery was established. Over the following months, the site grew through the addition of smaller regimental burial grounds, including the Bucks Cemetery, which was started by the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry in April 1915. By October 1915, the Gloucesters and the Loyal North Lancs regiments had created their own section, known as the Canadian Cemetery, Strand, named for its proximity to the Strand trench and its 28 Canadian graves. By 1917, the site was also utilized by New Zealand forces.
The cemetery's unique legal status is a direct result of a grant from King Albert I of Belgium. In recognition of the British Empire's role in the defense and liberation of his country, the King assigned the land to the United Kingdom in perpetuity. This act transformed the Belgian forest into a permanent Commonwealth War Graves Commission site, ensuring that the final resting place of those who fought on the Western Front would remain under British stewardship forever.
The site's history is marked by the shifting front lines of the Great War. On 10 April 1918, the cemetery fell into German hands during the conflict. It remained under German occupation for several months until the tide of the war turned. It was not until 29 September 1918, during the Hundred Days Offensive, that the fighting was finally swept out of the Ypres Salient, allowing the site to be reclaimed. Today, the cemetery reflects the vision of architect W H Cowlishaw, who designed the grounds to honor the fallen soldiers buried within its borders.
