In short: Established in 1859 to anchor the Suez Canal, Port Said emerged from a barren coastline where every resource, including water, had to be imported. Today, this city stands as a vital maritime gateway, bridging the Mediterranean and the Red Sea while serving as a historic nexus for international commerce.

The city of Port Said was founded on April 25, 1859, during the construction of the Suez Canal. Initially, the site lacked local resources, requiring the importation of everything from building materials to food and water. The settlement began with just 150 laborers living in tents, but the population grew rapidly, reaching 10,000 by the time the canal opened in 1869. The city's development was anchored by a single rocky outcrop discovered near the shore, which provided a necessary mooring point for early vessels.

Geologically, the area is part of the Isthmus of Suez, a land bridge between Africa and Asia that formed during the Quaternary Period. The canal itself, which stretches 193 kilometers between Port Said and the city of Suez, was an engineering feat that required the excavation of 74 million cubic meters of sediment. The canal's path was designed to utilize existing depressions, including Lake Manzala and the Bitter Lakes, rather than taking the shortest possible route across the isthmus.

Throughout the 20th century, Port Said evolved into a major commercial hub, bolstered by the export of Egyptian cotton and the establishment of rail links to Cairo. Its strategic importance often placed it at the center of geopolitical conflict, including the 1956 Suez Crisis and the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, which left the canal inoperative for eight years. Despite these challenges, the city remains a critical node in global shipping, with recent expansions in 2015 further increasing the canal's capacity to handle modern maritime traffic.
