Researching EQUATORIAL GUINEA · 8:52 · Video: Geography Now · Watch at the source

In short: Geography Now provides a comprehensive profile of every country on Earth, starting with an alphabetical journey. This episode explores the distinct geographical components of Equatorial Guinea, from its mainland territory to its scattered islands.

Equatorial Guinea is divided into two primary regions: Río Muni (Continental Equatorial Guinea) and five islands known as insular Equatorial Guinea. These include Bioko—the largest island—Corisco, Great Elobey, Little Elobey, and the volcanic island of Annobón, which sits nearly 400 miles southwest of Bioko.

The country gained independence from Spain in 1968. While Malabo served as a previous capital, a presidential decree on January 2, 2026, designated Ciudad de la Paz as the new capital.
