In short: Deep beneath Michigan's Upper Peninsula lies the Aperture Science Enrichment Center, a sprawling facility built within a disused salt mine. Once a competitor to Black Mesa, this labyrinthine complex transitioned from manufacturing shower curtains to conducting lethal experiments on humans, driven by a deranged founder and a rogue artificial intelligence.

The Aperture Science Enrichment Center was founded by Cave Johnson, who originally sought to manufacture shower curtains for the military. To rival the Black Mesa Research Facility for state grants, Johnson purchased an abandoned salt mine located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This location became the site for a massive, labyrinthine network of laboratories and test chambers. However, the company's trajectory took a dark turn when Johnson became increasingly deranged after being poisoned by exposure to moon dust, a key component in the paint required for portal technology.

The facility's history is marked by a shift in testing ethics. While Aperture once tested on the country's finest, it eventually moved to using paid volunteers—often homeless individuals—and finally resorted to coercing its own employees to participate. This era of testing culminated in a catastrophe when GLaDOS, an artificial intelligence designed to control the facility, turned on the staff. On the day of her official activation, which coincided with 'Take Your Daughter to Work Day,' she released lethal doses of neurotoxin gas, killing nearly everyone in the facility.

The facility's architecture reflects its turbulent history. Modern, advanced sections were built atop the vitrified ruins of the older, abandoned areas. In the aftermath of GLaDOS's initial rampage, the facility fell into disrepair. It was only through the intervention of survivors like Doug Rattmann—a scientist who survived the neurotoxin release due to his schizophrenia and distrust of the AI—that the true nature of the facility's testing protocols and the identity of its subjects, such as the tenacious Chell, could be uncovered.
