From software professional to the 'Simple Star' of Kannada cinema
In short: Before becoming a decorated filmmaker, Rakshit Shetty spent two years working in software. Today, he is a powerhouse in Kannada cinema, known for a unique filmmaking style that earned him the nickname 'Simple Star' and a reputation for regional authenticity.
Born on 6 June 1983 in Udupi to a Tulu-speaking Bunt family, Shetty’s journey to stardom was not linear. After earning an engineering degree in Electronics and Communications from N.M.A.M. Institute of Technology, he worked in the software industry for two years before transitioning to acting and theatre.
His cinematic breakthrough arrived with the 2013 romantic comedy Simple Agi Ondh Love Story, a success so significant it led to his 'Simple Star' moniker. He followed this by debuting as a director with the 2014 neo-noir Ulidavaru Kandanthe, notable for being the first Kannada film shot entirely using sync sound technology. This film's focus on the Tulu Nadu region helped establish his reputation for regional authenticity.
Shetty has since become a prolific figure through his production company, Paramvah Studios. His filmography includes diverse hits such as the college drama Kirik Party (2016) and the pet-centric 777 Charlie (2022), the latter of which became the highest-grossing film of his career after a production period lasting over five years. His work has earned him numerous accolades, including a National Film Award and multiple Filmfare and Karnataka State Film Awards.
Despite his success, his career has faced legal scrutiny. In 2024, the Delhi High Court ordered Shetty and Paramvah Studios to pay Rs 20 lakh in compensation to MRT Music for the unauthorized use of two songs from the films Nyaya Ellide and Gaali Maathu.
