How a desert airport transformed into a global transit hub through private partnership
In short: Jordan's Queen Alia International Airport evolved from a struggling facility into a premier regional gateway. By leveraging a unique public-private partnership, the airport replaced its aging infrastructure with a striking, tent-inspired terminal. Today, it stands as a model for infrastructure development, balancing massive passenger growth with award-winning customer service standards.
Located 30 kilometers south of Amman, Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) was originally constructed in 1983 to address surging traffic that the older Amman Civil Airport could no longer manage. By 1981, the facility was already processing over 2.3 million passengers annually. However, as demand continued to outpace capacity, the Jordanian government sought a radical solution to modernize its primary international gateway.
In 2007, the government awarded a 25-year concession to the Airport International Group (AIG) to rehabilitate and operate the site. This public-private partnership allowed the government to retain ownership while AIG managed the construction of a new, high-capacity terminal. Opened in 2013, the structure features a distinctive roof design inspired by traditional Bedouin tents, composed of 127 concrete domes. This expansion significantly boosted the airport's ability to handle millions of travelers, eventually reaching a capacity of 12 million passengers by 2016.
The airport's transformation has been marked by both operational and service-oriented milestones. In 2023, it became the first facility in the Middle East to reach Level 3 of the Airport Customer Experience Accreditation. Beyond its physical growth, the airport serves as a critical economic engine for Jordan, with the government receiving a majority share of gross revenues throughout the concession term. This collaborative model has turned the airport into a recognized leader in emerging market infrastructure, consistently ranking high in global passenger satisfaction benchmarks.
