A desert airport designed to house the world's most advanced modern stained glass project.
In short: King Khalid International Airport is more than a transit hub; it is a feat of engineering and art. Beyond its massive runways and control tower, the facility features a Royal Mosque adorned with a record-breaking stained glass installation, blending traditional Islamic geometry with cutting-edge modern construction techniques.
Located 35 kilometres north of Riyadh, King Khalid International Airport (KKIA) was commissioned to replace the city's original airport, which had reached maximum capacity by the 1970s. Designed by the architectural firm Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum, the airport officially opened for scheduled flights on 5 December 1983. The complex is defined by its triangular terminal design and a central Royal Mosque, which serves as the most dominant structure in the passenger area.
The mosque is celebrated for its integration of art and engineering. In 1982, artist Brian Clarke was commissioned to create a stained glass scheme that would marry historical Islamic decorative traditions with contemporary aesthetics. The resulting project, which took 150 craftsmen a year to fabricate, utilized 2,000 square metres of glass. It remains a landmark in the history of the medium, featuring a seven-foot clerestory ring of stained glass that separates the dome from the building's lower roof. The dome itself reaches 40 metres above the arrivals level, while a 39-metre minaret provides a focal point for the surrounding plaza.
The airport's infrastructure is built for scale and resilience. Its air traffic control tower stands 81 metres high, housing 19 floor levels and advanced radar systems supported by dual emergency power sources. While the airport currently operates with five terminals—the newest, Terminal 5, opened in 2016—it is slated for massive expansion. Future plans aim to increase capacity to 120 million passengers annually by 2030 and 185 million by 2050. This evolution reflects the airport's role as a primary gateway for Saudi Arabia, serving as a hub for both established carriers and the newly established Riyadh Air.
