In short: Quintana Roo is Mexico's easternmost state, a region defined by ancient Maya ruins, dense jungles, and a booming tourism industry. To maximize visitor spending and reduce energy consumption, the state took the unusual step of adopting its own permanent time zone, setting it apart from the rest of the country.

Located on the eastern Yucatán Peninsula, Quintana Roo has transformed from a territory into a major global tourist destination. While its southern regions maintain traditional economies focused on forestry, the north has seen rapid development, particularly around Cancún. This growth has brought significant economic benefits, yet it has also introduced complex challenges, including environmental strain and the economic marginalization of local Maya populations.

The state's history is deeply rooted in the Caste War of the 1840s, which led to the creation of the independent Maya nation of Chan Santa Cruz. It was not until 1974 that Quintana Roo was granted statehood within Mexico. Today, it is divided into 11 municipalities and serves as a repository for ancient history, housing significant archaeological sites like Tulum and Cobá. Recent underwater explorations in the region's submerged caves have even uncovered some of the oldest human remains on the American continent, dating back at least 9,900 years.

Environmental concerns are increasingly urgent. Experts warn that the state is facing a faunal crisis, with many animal species in decline due to habitat loss and hunting. Despite these pressures, the state continues to adapt its infrastructure to support its tourism-driven economy. The 2015 adoption of the Southeastern time zone—which remains constant year-round—is a prime example of this pragmatic approach, designed to keep tourists on beaches and in restaurants for longer while simultaneously lowering the electricity demands of the hospitality sector.
