From newsroom reporter to the corridors of Indian political and cricket power
In short: Before becoming a central figure in the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Rajeev Shukla was a journalist. His career has since spanned high-stakes politics and cricket administration, marked by significant leadership roles and intense public scrutiny regarding governance and ethics.
Born in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, on 13 September 1959, Rajeev Shukla’s professional journey began in media. He served as a reporter for the Hindi daily Jansatta until 1985, before becoming a senior editor at Ravivar Magazine. This background in journalism preceded his entry into politics, where he was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2000.
Shukla's political career includes membership in the Akhil Bhartiya Loktantrik Congress Party before merging with the Indian National Congress in 2003. Since then, he has occupied several important positions, such as his June 2022 unopposed election to the Rajya Sabha representing Chhattisgarh. His political influence is strengthened by family connections; his wife, Anurradha Prasad, holds the role of Managing Director at B.A.G. Films and Media Limited.
In the realm of cricket administration, Shukla has held several high-profile positions. He served as the Secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) from 1989 until 2017. He was also elected unopposed as the BCCI Vice-President in December 2020 and re-elected in 2022.
His career has not been without controversy. During his first IPL chairmanship, the 2013 spot-fixing scandal led to his resignation in June 2013. He has also faced scrutiny regarding potential conflicts of interest and disputes over BCCI cooling-off periods. In 2026, former IPL founder Lalit Modi made allegations regarding extortion and manipulation within the UPCA and IPL, though these claims have not received a response from Shukla or the Congress Party.
