The high-stakes mechanics of K-pop survival reality television
In short: How does a global girl group actually get formed? Beyond the flashy performances, it is a complex system of tiered evaluations, weighted voting, and strategic maneuvers. The competition involved twenty-two contestants navigating seven rounds of assessment to determine who would ultimately debut under a major entertainment agency.
R U Next? was a reality competition organized by Belift Lab and JTBC to create a global girl group. The show featured 22 contestants who underwent seven rounds of assessment, including missions that tested specific skills like expression, freestyle dance, and rap. Following Le Sserafim and NewJeans, Hybe launched its third girl group, Illit, which marked the initial debut for Belift Lab.
The competition utilized a sophisticated scoring architecture. In early rounds, trainees were divided into units and ranked into High, Mid, and Low levels. Coaches provided individual scores from 1 to 100, while winning units earned extra points (ranging from 50 to 100 depending on the mission). From Round 5 onward, the system shifted to a "Next Zone" (Orange Zone) for the top six and a "Grey Zone" for those ranked 7th and below, with the bottom three facing elimination. Final scores were a composite of coach evaluations, on-site audience points, and global fan voting.
The scale of the production was massive: the final episode reached 182 countries and regions, garnering over 23 million global votes. Despite this success, the show faced controversy regarding the debut selection process. While fans were heavily involved, the final lineup was determined by a combination of fan votes and "label picks," leading some viewers to feel the fan influence was secondary to the agency's internal decisions.
The journey for the contestants was varied. While five of the original six winners debuted as Illit on March 25, 2024, one member, Youngseo, left the lineup in January 2024 to join The Black Label. Other contestants from the show went on to debut in different groups, such as Jeemin joining Izna in November 2024 and Chanelle and Yewon joining Fifty Fifty in September 2024.
