The five elements that define a perfect idol group
In short: In the high-stakes world of K-pop, survival is often determined by a single audition. For the South Korean group Pentagon, success was built on a specific philosophy: mastering five essential elements—vocal or rap, dance, teamwork, talent, and mind—to achieve perfection.
Formed by Cube Entertainment in 2016, Pentagon emerged from the Mnet survival show *Pentagon Maker*. The group's name is a direct reference to their goal of achieving perfection by mastering five specific pillars: vocal/rap, dance, teamwork, talent, and mind. While the group's journey has seen significant shifts, including the departure of E'Dawn on November 14, 2018, and the subsequent departures of Yan An and Yuto, the group has maintained a presence in the industry through various iterations.
The group's rise was marked by rapid successes in Japan and on international charts. Following their debut on October 10, 2016, with the EP *Pentagon* and the single "Gorilla," they earned the nickname "King Kongdol" due to their choreography. By March 2017, they became the fastest group to reach number one on the Japanese Tower Records Monthly Chart with their EP *Gorilla*. Their international reach expanded further with their first U.S. chart entry on Billboard's world chart in 2017, thanks to the EP *Ceremony*.
Pentagon's evolution is also defined by their musical autonomy. By their fourth EP, *Demo_01*, released in September 2017, the group began releasing all self-composed songs. This creative control continued through their first full album, *Universe: The Black Hall*, released on February 12, 2020. Despite facing challenges such as member Jinho's military enlistment in May 2020 and various injuries among the lineup, the group has consistently navigated the complexities of the idol industry through diverse musical genres, from hip-hop to Latin-inspired dance-pop.
