From Bollywood Breakthroughs to Political Campaigns and Religious Transitions
In short: Rakhi Sawant is a masterclass in navigating the extremes of Indian public life. From her debut as an item girl to becoming a reality TV icon, she has navigated controversial marriages, religious conversions, and even a foray into national politics.
Born Neeru Bheda in 1978, Rakhi Sawant first entered the film industry in 1997 under the name Ruhi Sawant. Her career trajectory shifted significantly in 2003 when she auditioned four times for a breakthrough 'item number' in Chura Liyaa Hai Tumne. This role established her as a prominent media personality and sex symbol, leading to various appearances in Bollywood films like Masti and Main Hoon Na.
Sawant’s public persona is defined by high-profile controversy and reality television. She was a finalist in the first season of Bigg Boss (2006) and later appeared in multiple seasons, including Bigg Boss 14 and Bigg Boss Marathi. Her personal life has been equally scrutinized; she married businessman Ritesh Singh in 2019 before separating in 2022, then married Adil Khan Durrani in a nikah ceremony in 2022. Following this marriage, she converted to Islam and adopted the name Fatima.
Beyond entertainment, Sawant pursued politics by founding the Rashtriya Aam Party (RAP) in March 2014. Aiming to run independently for Mumbai North-West in the Lok Sabha polls, she proposed a 'green chilli' as her potential election emblem. While she received only 15 votes and lost her deposit, she later joined the RPI (Athawale) party to work for Dalits, campaigning in Assam and Uttar Pradesh. Her life remains a complex tapestry of religious shifts—including a conversion to Christianity in 2009—and public social upliftment initiatives in the Middle East.
Her career also includes diverse roles as a talk show host, singer, and dancer. Despite numerous controversies, including legal issues regarding remarks made against Sage Valmiki and physical injuries sustained during a wrestling promotion in 2018, she remains a fixture of Indian pop culture.
