From Indian Cinema Icon to Restaurateur: The Versatile Career of Rati Agnihotri
In short: Born in Bareilly, Rati Agnihotri rose to fame as a prominent actress in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil cinema during the 1980s. After a long hiatus, she successfully pivoted to diverse international film projects and stage work, while simultaneously establishing a culinary presence in Poland alongside her sister, Anita.
Rati Agnihotri, born on 10 December 1960, entered the entertainment industry early, beginning her modelling career at just ten years old. Her transition into film began in 1979 with the Tamil productions Puthiya Vaarpugal and Niram Maaratha Pookkal. She quickly gained national recognition in India, particularly for her performance in the 1981 tragedy Ek Duuje Ke Liye, a Hindi adaptation of the 1979 Telugu film Maro Charitra. This role earned her a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress, a feat she repeated for her work in the 1985 drama Tawaif.
Following her marriage to architect and businessman Anil Virwani on 9 February 1985 and the death of her father, Agnihotri stepped away from the Hindi film industry. During this period, she focused on her personal life, including the birth of her son, Tanuj Virwani, in 1986. Her absence from the screen lasted 16 years before she made a comeback in 2001. Her return featured roles in the Hindi movie Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi and the Tamil film Majunu, marking the start of a multifaceted second act in her professional life.
Her later career expanded significantly across languages and mediums. She made her debut in Malayalam cinema with the 2003 film Anyar and entered English-language film with An Ode to Lost Love in the same year. By 2008, she had also appeared in a Bengali production titled Aaina-te. Beyond the screen, Agnihotri engaged with live theatre, notably performing in the 2005 play Please Divorce Me Darling, and appeared in television serials like Sixer. Today, she maintains a notable presence in Poland, where she manages an Indian restaurant with her sister, Anita, demonstrating a career that transcends traditional boundaries of performance and geography.
