In short: Aruna Irani’s career spans five different Indian film industries. From her debut as a child artist to becoming a mainstay in supporting roles, she has navigated a massive filmography, eventually earning a lifetime achievement award for her immense contribution to Indian cinema.

Born in Mumbai to an Irani father and a Hindu mother, Aruna Irani is the eldest of eight siblings. Her early life was marked by financial constraints that forced her to discontinue her medical studies after the sixth standard. This lack of resources also meant she had to learn dancing through her film work rather than through formal training.

Irani’s filmography is vast, encompassing Hindi, Kannada, Punjabi, Marathi, and Gujarati cinema, with over 500 films to her credit. She began her career as a child artist, making her debut in the 1961 film Ganga Jumna. Throughout her career, she became a prolific presence in supporting and character roles, often collaborating with comedian Mehmood in films like Humjoli (1970) and Naya Zamana (1971).

Her technical mastery in the industry is evidenced by her record-setting ten nominations for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. While she faced several losses, she secured two wins for her performances in Pet Pyaar Aur Paap (1984) and Beta (1992). In the late 1980s and 1990s, her career shifted toward playing motherly roles. In recognition of her enduring impact, she was honored with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in January 2012.

Beyond acting, Irani expanded her influence into television, where she took on direction and production for various tele-serials. With brothers Indra Kumar, Adi Irani, and Firoz Irani working in cinema, and cousins such as actresses Sarita Joshi and Bindu, her family is firmly rooted in the sector.
