In short: Meaning sunshine, this Shandong prefecture-level city has built its identity around sustainability. By mandating solar water heaters in all new construction since the early 1990s, it achieved near-universal household adoption by 2007. Today, it balances its ancient archaeological roots with modern infrastructure, including a major international seaport and architectural landmarks.

Located on the Yellow Sea in southeastern Shandong, Rizhao—literally the place that first receives the sunshine—has evolved from an ancient site of the Dawenkou and Longshan cultures into a modern industrial and cultural hub. Its administrative history is long, tracing back to the Xia and Shang dynasties, with the name Rizhao officially established in 1087 during the Northern Song dynasty. It became a prefecture-level city in 1989, and today it administers four county-level divisions.

The city is perhaps best known for its aggressive sustainability policies. Starting in 1992, the local government mandated the installation of solar water heaters in all new buildings and renovations. This oversight was so effective that by 2007, 99% of households in central districts utilized solar heating, helping the city earn recognition from the United Nations as one of the world's most habitable cities in 2009. This commitment to modern living extends to its recent architectural projects, such as the Zaishui Art Museum, completed in December 2023.

Beyond its environmental reputation, Rizhao serves as a critical node in Northeast Asian logistics. The Port of Rizhao handles significant volumes of iron ore, coal, and other industrial materials. In 2011, it formed a strategic alliance with Busan in the Republic of Korea to bolster regional shipping. The city’s connectivity is further supported by the Rizhao Shanzihe Airport, which opened in 2015, and the Rizhao West railway station, which provides high-speed rail access. With a 2024 estimated population of 2,929,000, the city continues to expand its educational footprint through the University City in the Donggang District.
