In short: Real Betis is a club defined by its resilience. With a motto that translates to Long live Betis even when they lose, the team has navigated a century of tumultuous history, economic crises, and frequent relegations. Yet, their supporters remain among the most loyal in all of Spanish football.

Based in Seville, Real Betis Balompié has a storied past that began with its 1907 foundation. The name Betis originates from the Roman title for the Guadalquivir river, while the prefix Real was granted by King Alfonso XIII in 1914. The club’s iconic green and white vertical stripes were inspired by the Scottish club Celtic, a choice made by founder Manuel Ramos Asensio to mirror the Andalusian regional flag.

The club’s history is marked by extreme highs and lows. In 1935, under Irish coach Patrick O'Connell, Betis secured its only La Liga title. However, the onset of the Spanish Civil War and economic instability led to a rapid decline, culminating in a decade spent in the lower divisions starting in 1947. This era forged the club's identity, as fans famously supported the team during their Green March, a period of massive attendance even during away games.

Modern challenges have been equally intense. In 1992, the club faced a financial crisis that required fans to raise 400 million pesetas to meet new regulatory requirements. Later, the controversial tenure of majority shareholder Manuel Ruiz de Lopera led to massive protests, including a 2009 march where over 65,000 supporters demanded change. Legal interventions eventually removed Lopera’s influence, allowing the club to stabilize.

Despite these struggles, Betis has remained competitive, winning the Copa del Rey in 1977, 2005, and 2022. Today, the club is undergoing a significant transformation, including a €262 million redevelopment of their traditional home, the Estadio Benito Villamarín. While they await its completion, the team continues to play at the 70,000-seat Estadio La Cartuja, maintaining the enduring spirit that has defined the club for over a century.
