In short: Named after a god of strength, Hércules CF has spent a century oscillating between the heights of La Liga and the depths of regional football. From a 1930s golden era to a dramatic 2010s survival story, the club's history is a masterclass in the volatile mechanics of sporting prestige.

Founded on October 25, 1922, by Vicente Pastor Alfosea, the club was named after the Greek hero Hercules to embody strength and invincibility. The team's identity was forged through a series of early transitions, including a period as a subsidiary of Club Natación Alicante. This merger allowed Hércules to adopt its iconic blue and white colors and inherit a massive fanbase, establishing it as the premier team in Alicante.

The club's rapid ascent in the 1930s saw them win back-to-back Tercera División titles, leading to a historic promotion to the Spanish top tier in 1934. During their debut La Liga season, they secured a notable 1–0 victory over the eventual champions, Athletic Bilbao. However, the following four decades were marked by instability, with the club oscillating between the second and third divisions until a sustained ten-year spell in the top flight during the 1970s and '80s.

Modern history has been defined by high-stakes drama and financial peril. In 2010, the club secured a cinematic promotion back to the top flight after a 2–0 away win against Real Unión. Yet, by 2013, they were relegated again, facing a debt crisis so severe that the club's accounts were frozen. It took a 2017 intervention by businessman Juan Carlos Ramírez to negotiate with tax authorities and save the club from dissolution. After a historic relegation to the fourth tier in 2022, the team finally secured promotion back to the Primera RFEF in May 2024.

Beyond the pitch, Hércules maintains a unique international connection: since 2003, they have shared a friendship with the Greek club Iraklis. This bond was forged online because 'Iraklis' is the Greek name for Hercules, the Roman name for the very hero who inspired the Spanish club's birth.
