How a historic Spanish football club survived bankruptcy through the passion of its fans
In short: Real Oviedo, a cornerstone of Asturian football, has navigated a turbulent century. From the electric, record-breaking forward lines of the 1930s to the brink of total collapse in 2012, the club’s survival story is defined by its resilient supporters and a dramatic rescue by one of the world's wealthiest individuals.
Established in 1926 following the union of two local teams, Stadium Ovetense and Real Club Deportivo Oviedo, the club quickly made its mark on Spanish football. By the 1930s, the team featured the legendary Delanteras Eléctricas, a forward quartet that revolutionized the game with high-tempo, one-touch play under the guidance of English manager Fred Pentland. Their dominance was interrupted by the Spanish Civil War, during which their stadium was repurposed as an ammunition dump, rendering it unusable for the 1939–40 season.
The club's modern history has been marked by extreme volatility, oscillating between the top flight and lower divisions. A high point occurred in 1962–63 with a third-place finish in La Liga, yet financial pressures frequently hampered progress. By the early 2000s, the club faced a severe crisis, dropping to the fourth tier due to mounting debts and a lack of institutional support. This era of instability tested the loyalty of the fanbase, who consistently set attendance records even in the lower divisions, proving that the club's identity remained intact despite its professional decline.
The turning point arrived in 2012 when the club faced imminent bankruptcy. In a desperate bid for survival, Real Oviedo appealed to its supporters to purchase shares. The campaign drew global attention and financial backing from former players like Juan Mata and Santi Cazorla. This grassroots effort was bolstered on 17 November 2012, when Carlos Slim, then the world's richest person, invested $2.5 million to secure a controlling stake. This intervention stabilized the institution, allowing the club to eventually climb back through the ranks of the Spanish league system.
