How a football legend saved his hometown club from financial collapse and total ruin
In short: Albacete Balompié has spent decades oscillating between Spain's top tiers and the brink of administrative extinction. When the club faced a terminal financial crisis in 2011, it was rescued by a local hero who had once played there as a youth. His intervention proved vital for the club's survival.
Founded on 1 June 1939, Albacete Balompié emerged from the merger of two local clubs, Club Deportivo Nacional and Albacete Foot-Ball Club. The team, based in the autonomous community of Castile–La Mancha, was originally named Sociedad Deportiva Albacete Foot-ball Association. However, this title was short-lived; in 1941, the Francoist regime mandated the castellanization of all football club names, forcing the current identity. The club has since become a fixture of Spanish football, playing its home matches at the 17,524-capacity Estadio Carlos Belmonte, a venue originally constructed in 1960.
The club's history is defined by dramatic volatility. Under coach Benito Floro in 1989, the team achieved a historic promotion to La Liga, where they finished a surprising seventh in their debut season. Yet, the club has frequently struggled with economic instability. By the 2010–11 season, the situation became dire, with the team finishing last in the Segunda División and suffering relegation to the third tier after 21 years. Facing potential administrative liquidation, the club found an unlikely savior in Andrés Iniesta.
In December 2011, Iniesta, who had developed his skills at the club as a youth before his rise to global fame at Barcelona, became the major shareholder. He donated €420,000 to stabilize the club's finances. His commitment continued in 2013, when he appointed Agustín Lázaro—the CEO of his personal winery—as chairman and provided an additional €240,000 loan to cover unpaid player wages. This capital infusion prevented the club from being demoted to the fourth tier for financial reasons, allowing it to continue its pursuit of sporting success, including a notable 2026 Copa del Rey victory over Real Madrid.
