In short: After waking from a coma caused by a gunshot wound, sheriff's deputy Rick Grimes finds a world overrun by reanimated humans. As he navigates the apocalypse, his journey from a moral everyman to a colder, hardened leader tests the very limits of his humanity.

In 2003, Tony Moore and writer Robert Kirkman introduced Rick Grimes within The Walking Dead #1. In the comic book series, Rick's role as the protagonist continues until an epilogue set decades after his death. In both the comics and the television series portrayed by Andrew Lincoln, the character's journey begins when he awakens from a life-threatening coma to find the world infested by 'walkers'.

Rick's survival is marked by a shifting moral compass. Initially described as an everyman who emphasizes moral codes, his experiences lead him to become increasingly 'colder' toward enemies. His leadership is tested through various conflicts, including a struggle with his partner Shane Walsh and encounters with dangerous groups like the Saviors, led by Negan, who demand half of the Alexandria Safe-Zone's supplies.

The character's complexity is reflected in his diverse environments, from the initial Atlanta camp to the prison and the Alexandria Safe-Zone. In an alternate reality from the Alexandria arc, a version known as Rick Grimes 2000 exists—a cyborg rebuilt to face a resurrected Governor. This explores the character's resilience and the extreme lengths required for survival in a post-apocalyptic landscape.

The portrayal of Rick by Andrew Lincoln has been highly acclaimed, earning him a Saturn Award for Best Actor on Television in both 2015 and 2017. Lincoln drew inspiration for the role from Gary Cooper's performance in the 1952 Western High Noon, as well as the television drama Breaking Bad.
