How a small-hub airport in Rhode Island became a center for international aviation
In short: Rhode Island T. F. Green International Airport, the first state-owned airport in the United States, has evolved from a 1931 local airfield into a primary international hub. Despite its modest size, it serves a massive regional market and has navigated complex challenges, from runway expansion controversies to near-miss aviation incidents.
Opened in 1931 as Hillsgrove State Airport, the facility was named for Theodore Francis Green, a former Rhode Island governor and senator. Over the decades, the airport has undergone significant physical transformations to accommodate shifting aviation demands. A major terminal replacement in 1996, named for Governor Bruce Sundlun, modernized the facility, while a long-planned runway expansion project—which finally reached a length of 8,700 feet in 2017—sought to attract longer-range, international nonstop flights.
The airport's history is marked by both growth and consolidation. While passenger traffic peaked at 5.7 million in 2005, the subsequent industry trend of airlines favoring larger hubs led to a decline, with numbers falling to 3.5 million by 2015. Despite this, the airport remains a vital regional asset, serving a potential market of 7.5 million people within a 90-minute radius. It has hosted various notable visitors, including multiple U.S. Presidents and even a British Airways Concorde in 1988.
Safety and operational complexity are constant themes in the airport's history. A notable 1999 runway incursion involving a United Airlines Boeing 757 and a FedEx Boeing 727 highlighted the risks of low-visibility operations and communication errors. The incident, which resulted in the closure of one runway, underscored the importance of rigorous air traffic control and pilot coordination. Today, the airport continues to serve as a primary commercial facility, balancing its role as a regional hub with the ongoing challenges of managing traffic in a densely developed area.
