How a misheard lyric and an unlicensed sample created the UK's biggest 1989 hit
In short: The Italian house track Ride on Time became a global phenomenon, topping charts despite being built on a stolen vocal sample and a misunderstood lyric. Its path to success involved secret re-recordings, a model miming on television, and a legal battle that left the original singer without credit for years.
Produced by the Italian team Groove Groove Melody, Ride on Time was an attempt to blend the energy of rock bands like Led Zeppelin with dance beats. The group used an Akai S900 sampler to lift vocals from Loleatta Holloway’s 1980 single Love Sensation. They misheard the lyric right on time as ride on time, which became the song's title. Despite an initial disastrous club test where the floor cleared, the track was eventually signed by Discomagic Records.
The song’s UK success was accidental. DJs Paul Oakenfold and Danny Rampling discovered an early pressing in Italy and brought copies to England. When the label Deconstruction licensed the track, they faced legal pressure from Salsoul Records, the owner of the original sample. To resolve the dispute, BMG—the parent company—secretly hired Heather Small to re-record the vocals. Small was not told the purpose of the session and recorded her parts in under an hour for a flat fee. For public appearances, the group hired model Katrin Quinol to mime the vocals, a practice common in Italy but controversial elsewhere.
Ride on Time reached number one in the UK on 3 September 1989, staying there for six weeks and becoming the country's bestselling single of the year. While critics were initially divided—some calling it derivative or irritating—it later gained status as a modern classic of Italo house. Loleatta Holloway, the original voice, expressed deep frustration that she received no credit while the song topped charts. Although Black Box eventually bought the rights to the sample in 2018, the legacy of the track remains tied to its complex, often contentious history of production and performance.
