From WWII military base to a stage for Formula racing
In short: Rio de Janeiro’s Galeão International Airport is far more than a transit hub. Once a strategic Allied base during World War II, this massive 1,788.2-hectare site has hosted everything from the supersonic Concorde to professional automobile racing on its runways.
The airport's history is deeply intertwined with Brazil's military and aviation evolution. Originally established near Galeão beach—the site where the galleon Padre Eterno was built in 1663—the area became a School of Naval Aviation in 1923. Following the creation of the Brazilian Air Force Ministry in 1941, the site transformed into the Galeão Air Force Base. When Brazil joined the Allies against the Axis powers in August 1942, the aerodrome became a vital hub for military operations.
As commercial aviation expanded after the war, the facility transitioned from a military outpost to an international gateway. The 'old Galeão' terminal, opened in 1952, eventually gave way to modern infrastructure, including Passenger Terminal 1, which opened in 1977. The airport's prestige was cemented by historic arrivals, such as the first scheduled Air France Concorde flight from Paris in January 1976, and even a cameo in the 1979 James Bond film, Moonraker.
The airport has faced significant shifts in dominance and management. In 1985, it lost its status as Brazil's primary international hub to São Paulo–Guarulhos. However, recent years have seen a complex tug-of-war with Santos Dumont Airport. In 2022, passenger numbers at Santos Dumont actually surpassed Galeão's, leading to a controversial 2024 cap on Santos Dumont's traffic to restore balance. Today, the facility is entering a new era of joint management between AENA and the RioGaleão consortium, following a major bidding process.
Beyond passengers, the runways have served as a venue for the Stock Car Pro Series. In April 2022, the Cacá Bueno Circuit was constructed using parts of runways 10/28, though the racing calendar was later adjusted due to the post-pandemic surge in flight volumes.
