The arid desert where the Nama people preserve an ancient, nomadic way of life
In short: In South Africa’s rugged north-western corner lies the Richtersveld, the world’s only arid biodiversity hotspot. Here, the indigenous Nama people continue a traditional transhumant lifestyle, migrating seasonally with their livestock across a landscape of volcanic mountains and succulent ecosystems that rely on morning fog for survival in extreme heat.
The Richtersveld is a dramatic, high-altitude desert landscape in South Africa’s Northern Cape province, ranging from sea level to the 1,377-meter peak of Cornellberg. Its climate is defined by harsh extremes; summer temperatures can soar to 53°C, while winter brings cold, gale-force winds from the Atlantic. Because rainfall is scarce—varying from just 5 mm in the east to 200 mm in the west—the local flora and fauna depend heavily on 'Ihuries' or 'Malmokkies,' the moisture-rich early morning mists that roll in from the ocean.
This environment supports an extraordinary level of biodiversity, with approximately 4,849 documented plant species, 40 percent of which are endemic. Among the most iconic is the 'Halfmensboom' (Pachypodium namaquanum), a tree the Nama people revere as the embodiment of their ancestors. The region also serves as a critical refuge for the Khoikhoi culture. The Nama, the largest surviving clan of the Khoikhoi, manage the area and continue to practice their ancient nomadic herding traditions, which once spanned the entire south-western part of Africa.
The area is divided into two primary zones: the Richtersveld National Park, established in 1991 after 18 years of negotiation, and the Richtersveld Cultural and Botanical Landscape, which was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in June 2007. While the National Park is managed jointly with South African National Parks, the Community Conservancy—the core of the World Heritage Site—is managed entirely by the local community. Unlike the National Park, this core zone remains free from diamond mining, preserving a more pristine landscape that remains intrinsically connected to the cultural survival of the Nama people.
