Rio Linda, California: From Poultry Farming Hub to Suburban Sacramento Community
In short: Once a quiet collection of poultry farms, this Sacramento County census-designated place has evolved into a suburban community of nearly 16,000 people. While its name translates to pretty river, its history is deeply tied to the land, the railroad, and a unique place in American cultural commentary.
Located on land originally part of the 1844 Rancho Del Paso Mexican land grant, the area that became Rio Linda was subdivided in 1912. Initially known as Dry Creek Station, it served as a flag stop for the Northern Electric Railroad. By 1920, the community had established itself as a hub for poultry production, a reputation that grew significantly over the following decades. The area experienced steady population growth throughout the latter half of the 1900s, bolstered by its proximity to the Sacramento metropolitan area and demographic shifts during the 1950s and 1960s.
Today, Rio Linda is a census-designated place covering 9.9 square miles. As of the 2020 census, its population reached 15,944, with a median age of 37.1 years. The community maintains a distinct identity, hosting local events like the annual Farm and Tractor Days and the Rio Linda Elverta Country Faire. It also serves as the northern terminus for the 10-mile Sacramento Northern Bike Trail, which repurposes the abandoned railroad right-of-way that once connected the area to downtown Sacramento.
The community has occasionally entered the national spotlight in unexpected ways. It was frequently mentioned by conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, who used the town's name in a light-hearted, chiding manner. Beyond its media mentions, the area has a rich local history, including the Roy Hayer Memorial Racetrack, where four-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon competed early in his career. With amenities like a seed library, public parks, and a local airport, Rio Linda continues to balance its agricultural heritage with its modern role as a residential part of the Sacramento region.
