In short: Nestled along the Colorado River and the Roan Plateau, Rifle, Colorado, evolved from an 1882 settlement into a regional center for cattle ranching and energy. While its history is defined by boom-and-bust economic cycles, the town remains a gateway to outdoor recreation and a unique piece of American landscape art.

Founded in 1882 by Abram Maxfield and incorporated in 1905, Rifle takes its name from Rifle Creek, which joins the Colorado River at the town site. Its early development was accelerated by the arrival of the railroad in 1889, which transformed the community from a remote outpost into a vital commercial hub. Before this connection, cattle were driven over mountains to reach distant markets; afterwards, the town became a central point for trade, shipping goods east and west.

The region's economy has long been tied to its natural resources. Initially dominated by ranching, the area saw intense conflict between cattle ranchers and sheep herders, with grazing rights on the Roan Plateau becoming a flashpoint for violence. Today, the city is located in the Piceance Basin, a region rich in fossil fuels, particularly oil shale. This reliance on energy extraction has subjected the city to volatile boom-and-bust economic cycles, prompting ongoing environmental advocacy, such as the 2007 Campaign to Save Roan Plateau, which seeks to limit drilling on the plateau locals call the Bookcliffs.

Beyond its industrial history, Rifle is known for its proximity to diverse natural attractions, including Rifle Falls State Park and Rifle Gap State Park. The latter was the site of a notable 1972 art installation, the Valley Curtain project by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The massive curtain, suspended at Rifle Gap, famously lasted only 28 hours before being destroyed by high winds. Today, the city maintains a population of over 10,000, serving as a regional center with its own airport, college campus, and the Garfield County Fair Grounds.
