Rodanthe is a tiny Outer Banks community that celebrates Christmas on January 6th
In short: Perched on the edge of Hatteras Island, this North Carolina village is the state's easternmost point. Beyond its reputation for surfing and kiteboarding, Rodanthe maintains a unique cultural heritage, including a tradition of celebrating Old Christmas in January, complete with a mythical beast known as Old Buck.
Rodanthe is a census-designated place within the Chicamacomico settlement on Hatteras Island, North Carolina. It is physically constrained by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Pamlico Sound to the west, with the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge to the north and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore to the south. This geography limits the community's potential for expansion. As of the 2020 census, the area was home to 213 residents across 81 households.
The community is perhaps most famous for its adherence to the Julian Calendar for Christmas festivities. Residents celebrate Old Christmas on January 6, a custom preserved from the original settlers who utilized the Old Style calendar. Folklore suggests that a creature called Old Buck appears during these celebrations, a figure potentially linked to European traditions like Krampus or Belsnickel. This historical character is just one facet of a town that also hosts the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station, a historic site now serving as a museum.
Modern Rodanthe is heavily influenced by its coastal environment and seasonal tourism. The climate is humid subtropical, making it prone to hurricane strikes between June and November, with peak activity in late August and September. While many local shops and restaurants operate seasonally, the town gained significant cultural visibility following the 2002 publication of the novel Nights in Rodanthe. The subsequent 2008 film adaptation featured a local rental house, Serendipity, which was transformed into the fictional Inn at Rodanthe. Threatened by erosion, the structure was later relocated less than one mile south by a private businessman and remains a popular year-round attraction today.
