In short: Located in southeastern Poland, Rzeszów has evolved from a 14th-century merchant town into a vital metropolitan hub. Once a target for invading armies and the site of intense wartime struggle, the city now serves as a key logistical artery for international military support and a growing center for business.

Founded in the Middle Ages and granted city rights by King Casimir III the Great in 1354, Rzeszów flourished as a crossroads for trade between Europe, the Ottoman Empire, and the Baltic. Its strategic location on major routes brought wealth and diverse communities, including a significant Jewish population that reached 14,000 by the eve of World War II. However, this same geography made it a frequent target for conflict, from Tatar raids in the 15th century to the devastating occupations of the World Wars.

The 20th century brought profound transformation. Under German occupation, the city was renamed Reichshof, and its Jewish community was systematically destroyed in the Holocaust. Following the war, Rzeszów became a center for the Polish Underground State and later a focal point for the anti-communist resistance, including the 1981 farmer protests that led to the creation of Rural Solidarity. The city's administrative status shifted repeatedly, eventually becoming the capital of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship in 1999.

Today, Rzeszów is a rare example of a growing Polish city, with a population approaching 200,000. Its modern significance was underscored in 2022, when it became a critical hub for the transshipment of military aid to Ukraine. With its well-preserved Old Town, expanding municipal borders, and role as a regional economic engine, Rzeszów balances its deep historical scars with a trajectory of rapid development and contemporary geopolitical importance.
