From rural trafficking traps to urban gold heists
In short: A single crime series can span continents of geography and social strata. Abar Proloy evolves from a gritty investigation into human trafficking in the dense Sundarban forests to a sophisticated urban conspiracy in Kolkata, tracing the evolution of crime from rural exploitation to high-profile political corruption.
Abar Proloy, which translates to 'Doomsday Again,' serves as a narrative expansion of the 2013 film Proloy. The series, written and directed by Raj Chakraborty, establishes a gritty foundation in the Sundarban forest of West Bengal. The first season, released on the ZEE5 platform on August 11, 2023, focuses on a harrowing social issue: a gang of teenage boys luring women and girls into traps of love to traffic them to other states. This narrative arc centers on Animesh Datta, a Special Crime Branch officer played by Saswata Chatterjee, who is tasked with dismantling this violent network.
The series underwent a significant structural shift for its second season, which premiered on February 27, 2026. Moving away from the rural wilderness, the setting shifts to the urban landscape of Kolkata. The stakes transition from human trafficking to high-profile gold heists executed by a criminal syndicate. By incorporating the 'Netaji's Salute' mark at every location, this transition adds intricacy, implying that political graft drives a broad plot instead of mere regional offences.
The production's evolution reflects a deliberate move by director Raj Chakraborty to explore different crime thriller formats. To mark this transition, a massive 50-foot promotional poster was unveiled in Garia, Kolkata, in February 2026. While the first season faced some scrutiny regarding character similarities to other popular web series like Sacred Games, the series remains a notable example of Bengali-language action thrillers that bridge the gap between rural social issues and urban political intrigue.
The ensemble cast includes notable figures such as Paran Bandopadhyay as a retired schoolteacher and Subhashree Ganguly as an SP. By weaving together these diverse characters—from local doons to high-ranking officers—the series attempts to map the entire ecosystem of crime in West Bengal, from the deepest forests to the heart of the city's political machinery.
