In short: Sanming is a sprawling prefecture-level city defined by its rugged, mountainous terrain and deep cultural roots. While it is celebrated as the greenest city in China's greenest province, it is perhaps most famous globally for its unique Danxia landforms and its status as the birthplace of iconic culinary traditions.

Located in western Fujian, Sanming occupies a vast area of 22,965 square kilometres. Its geography is dominated by the Wuyi and Daiyun mountain ranges, which account for 82 percent of its total landmass. This dramatic landscape has fostered a wealth of natural wonders, including the UNESCO-recognized Taining Golden Lake Geopark and various karst formations like Yuhua Cave and Goose Cave. These sites serve as critical centers for both tourism and ecological preservation, with the city maintaining four protected national parks.

Beyond its natural beauty, Sanming is a repository of history and culture. Taining County houses ancient architectural structures dating back to the Ming Dynasty, which are protected as state-level cultural relics. The region also holds significant historical weight, such as Shibi Village in Ninghua, which is recognized as the originating place of the Hakka people, and Youxi, the birthplace of the philosopher Zhu Xi. These sites offer a window into the evolution of Chinese heritage, preserved amidst the city's mountainous backdrop.

The city's cultural influence extends to the dinner table through the famous Sha County snacks. These culinary traditions are considered living artifacts of Han food culture, with 39 varieties recognized as Famous Chinese Snacks. In 2006, the China Cuisine Association designated Sha County as a Snack Culture City, and the production process for these dishes was later named a national intangible cultural heritage. Today, these snacks are a staple across mainland China, representing a legacy that has grown far beyond the city's borders.
