The rise and fall of a Dutch footballing pendulum
In short: From the brink of bankruptcy in 2005 to the heights of the Eredivisie, SC Cambuur’s history is a rollercoaster of promotion, relegation, and intense regional rivalry. Discover how this Leeuwarden club transformed from a struggling side into a top-tier competitor.
Founded on 19 June 1964, SC Cambuur has long been a fixture of Dutch football, though its journey through the leagues has been anything but linear. The club, which draws its yellow and blue colours from the Cammingha family coat of arms, has spent a total of nine seasons in the Eredivisie, the Netherlands' top flight. Its history is marked by periods of significant volatility, including a narrow escape from bankruptcy in 2005 and a subsequent restructuring period that brought financial stability by 2010.
The club's relationship with the top tier is defined by frequent shifts in status. After winning the Eerste Divisie in 1991–92, they were relegated two seasons later. They returned to the Eredivisie in 1998, only to face relegation again after the 1999–2000 season. Most recently, after a period of struggle, the club secured promotion for the 2026–27 season by finishing as runners-up in the 2025–26 campaign.
Beyond the pitch, the club maintains a deep connection to the Friesland region through its youth academy and the Cambuur Foundation. This community bond is perhaps most visible in the Kooi Stadion, a 15,000-seat venue that has hosted the club's home games since August 2024. The stadium is home to the M.I.-Side, a notorious group of ultras whose name pays homage to the Marathonstraat and Insulindestraat streets where the club's former stadium stands were located.
