An active American airport runway features two permanent grave markers embedded in the asphalt
In short: Most airports are defined by concrete and steel, but one facility in Georgia holds a more somber history. During a runway expansion, construction crews encountered a family plot belonging to the original landowners. Because next of kin could not be found, the graves remain undisturbed directly within the pavement.
Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, located eight miles northwest of the Savannah Historic District, is a commercial and military-use facility. Its history dates back to the 1940s when the U.S. Army Air Corps developed the site as Chatham Field, a training base for B-24 bomber crews. Over the decades, the airport evolved through various names, including Travis Field, before adopting its current title in 2003 to reflect its service to both Georgia and South Carolina regions.
The most unusual feature of the airport lies on Runway 10, the primary east-west strip. Approximately 3,680 feet from the western end, two concrete grave markers belonging to the Dotson family are set into the runway surface. These graves, the earliest dating to 1857, were discovered during construction work. Under federal law, moving a grave requires permission from the next of kin; when those individuals could not be located, the project proceeded by building over the site while leaving the markers in place. It is believed to be the only instance in the United States where gravestones are integrated into an active runway.
Today, the airport serves as a hub for both civilian travel and the Georgia Air National Guard, which operates the 165th Airlift Wing from an on-site base. The facility has undergone significant modernization, including a $68.5 million terminal project completed in 1994 and subsequent expansions to gates and parking. Despite its industrial function, the airport has earned recognition for its passenger experience, ranking as a top domestic airport in surveys by Travel+Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler in recent years.
