The hidden mechanics and high-profile scandals of Scientology
In short: Explore the inner workings of one of the world's most secretive organizations. This documentary investigates how a movement founded by a science fiction author gained millions of followers while facing allegations of abuse, fraud, and espionage.
Founded in 1953 by Lafayette Ronald Hubbard, Scientology is defined as a religion by some nations and a dangerous sect by others. Followers aim to progress up the "Bridge to Total Freedom" through various methods based on beliefs in reincarnation and a higher power.
Despite its high-profile backing from stars like Tom Cruise, the organization faces severe criticism from former members who report harassment and abuse. The documentary examines how the group manages recruitment, its influence on legal outcomes in France, and its history of criminal convictions involving organized fraud and domestic espionage.
