In short: She was the quiet, intense force behind L. Ron Hubbard. While he was the flamboyant entrepreneur, Mary Sue Hubbard managed the movement's sprawling finances and its controversial Guardian's Office, even commanding a ship during a period of intense government scrutiny.

Mary Sue Hubbard, born Mary Sue Whipp in 1931, was far more than a supportive spouse. A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, she transitioned from a student of Dianetics in 1951 to a central figure in the movement's management. She is even credited with helping to coin the term 'Scientology'. Her early life in Texas saw her studying at Rice University before her path shifted toward petroleum research.

Her leadership was marked by both administrative efficiency and significant controversy. As head of the Guardian's Office, she oversaw the organization's various subdivisions and handled massive amounts of cash. In 1972, Hubbard ordered approximately $2 million in cash to be transferred from Swiss accounts to the ship *Apollo*, where Mary Sue held the only set of keys to the filing cabinet containing the funds. She also served as the first Academy Supervisor for the movement's Washington, D.C. branch.

Her tenure was not without legal peril. In August 1978, the United States government indicted her on conspiracy charges related to illegal covert operations against government agencies. Following a conviction in December 1979, she was sentenced to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine, eventually serving a year in 1983. Her legal battles followed years of managing the Church's primary corporations in California and the United Kingdom.

Despite her high-ranking roles, her reputation among followers was polarized. While some saw her as a dedicated leader, others, including staff members, described her as autocratic or even 'nasty'. Even during the 'liability cruise' of 1969, where she captained the *Royal Scotman* under harsh conditions, she was noted for being scrupulously fair to her exhausted crew. She was a director for the Hubbard Explorational Company Limited, which was established in late 1966.
