A ninth-century kingdom still maps Highlands, Lowlands, Uplands
Scotland, part of the United Kingdom, covers northern Great Britain plus the Hebrides and Northern Isles. About 5.4 million people lived there in 2022, with Edinburgh the capital and Glasgow the largest city. Its Highlands hold Ben Nevis, at 1,345 metres the highest peak in the British Isles.
Hamburgian Upper Paleolithic tools mark early post-glacial hunters in the Bølling–Allerød warm pulse. Those hunters arrived roughly 14,500 to 14,000 years ago as the ice sheet retreated, and Neolithic farmers followed about 6,000 years ago, building villages such as Skara Brae on Orkney. The Greek sailor Pytheas, around 320 BC, called Britain’s northern tip Orcas, the root of Orkney.
Agricola defeated a Caledonian army at Mons Graupius in 83 AD, but Rome never held most of the country, and the Antonine Wall, begun in 142, ran only between the Forth and Clyde. From the sixth century the land was split among Picts, Northumbrian Angles, Britons around Dumbarton Rock and the Gaels of Dál Riata, while Saint Columba preached from Iona. Viking raids from the eighth century helped Kenneth I, a Gael, take over Pictland, and Pictish speech had died out by about 1000.
The Kingdom of Scotland coalesced in the ninth century, leaned on the Auld Alliance with France, and shared a monarch with England after James VI inherited southern thrones in 1603 before the 1707 union. A Scottish Parliament returned in 1999 with devolved powers, and the country keeps its own legal and education systems.
The mainland divides into mountainous Highlands in the north and northwest, a flatter central belt of Lowlands, and the hilly Southern Uplands along the border. The name traces to Latin Scoti for Gaels; Freeman links possible *skot roots to darkness metaphors. Late Latin Scotia first meant Ireland, and only by the eleventh century did it name Gaelic Scotland north of the Forth.
