How a film producer built an American racing legacy from a Ferrari obsession
In short: James Glickenhaus transitioned from Hollywood to high-performance automotive manufacturing by commissioning a one-off Ferrari design. Today, his company, Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus, stands as a rare American boutique manufacturer. It has successfully challenged global racing giants, securing historic podium finishes at Le Mans with cars built for extreme endurance.
Founded in 2004 in Sleepy Hollow, New York, Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus began as a passion project for American film producer James Glickenhaus. The company, named for Glickenhaus and his wife, Meg Cameron, initially focused on creating specialized vehicles for the grueling Nürburgring 24 Hours. This ambition was sparked by a 2005 collaboration with Pininfarina, where Glickenhaus commissioned a custom sports car inspired by the classic Ferrari P series. This project, the Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina, debuted in 2006 and served as the foundational inspiration for the company's future proprietary designs.
The transition from enthusiast projects to a manufacturer occurred in 2015 with the unveiling of the SCG 003, the company's first car built from the ground up. To facilitate production, Glickenhaus partnered with the Italian firm Manifattura Automobili Torino. The company’s portfolio has since expanded to include the SCG 004, the off-road SCG Boot—inspired by Steve McQueen’s 1967 Baja Boot—and the SCG 007 LMH. These vehicles represent a commitment to low-volume, high-performance engineering that bridges the gap between road-legal sports cars and track-focused racing machines.
The company reached a significant milestone in 2021 by entering the Le Mans Hypercar category with the SCG 007 LMH. As the first American sports car to compete in this class, it made history at the 2022 24 Hours of Le Mans by securing an overall podium finish. This achievement marked the first time an American sports car had reached the podium at the event in 53 years, dating back to the 1969 race. Today, the manufacturer continues to refine its lineup, offering a range of road cars while maintaining its identity as a boutique American challenger in the world of elite motorsport.
