In short: Located on the Sunshine Coast, this district municipality is defined by its unique geography between the Sechelt Inlet and the Strait of Georgia. While known for its natural beauty and temperate climate, the community also manages complex infrastructure challenges and a rich history rooted in the shíshálh Nation.

Sechelt is a district municipality in British Columbia, situated approximately 50 kilometres northwest of Vancouver. Its geography is defined by an isthmus that connects the Sechelt Peninsula to the provincial mainland. This narrow strip of land is bounded to the north by the Sechelt Inlet and to the south by the Strait of Georgia. The area has been home to the shíshálh Nation for thousands of years, who historically practiced a subsistence strategy based on hunting and gathering. The name Sechelt is derived from the shíshálh word ch'atlich.

The modern municipality was incorporated in 1956 and later expanded in 1986. Today, it encompasses 39.02 square kilometres and supports a population of 10,847, according to the 2021 census. The community is known for having the warmest nights in Canada and maintains a Temperate Oceanic climate. Its economy and development have been shaped by the logging and fishing industries, as well as the later rise of tourism, which was accelerated by the construction of Highway 101 in 1952 and improved ferry access.

The area faces modern challenges, including the 2019 evacuation of the Seawatch subdivision due to sinkhole risks, which led to ongoing legal disputes between residents, the municipality, and developers. Despite these issues, Sechelt remains a hub for regional services, including the Sunshine Coast Regional District offices, a hospital, and a satellite university campus. The region also hosts significant natural sites like the Hidden Groves, an old-growth forest area protected from logging, and the Sechelt Quarry, which is among the largest open-pit gravel operations in North America.
