The cosmic hobo who saved Doctor Who by inventing the art of regeneration
In short: When the original lead of Doctor Who fell ill, the show faced cancellation. Patrick Troughton stepped in as the Second Doctor, transforming the character into a bumbling, whimsical tramp. His performance not only proved that the protagonist could change faces, but it also secured the series' future for decades to come.
In 1966, the departure of William Hartnell, the series' first lead, forced the BBC to innovate. Producers Kit Pedler and Gerry Davis introduced the concept of 'renewal'—later known as regeneration—to explain the character's physical and personality shift. This allowed the show to recast the role without direct comparison to Hartnell. Patrick Troughton, a respected character actor, was initially hesitant but accepted the role after financial incentives were offered. He famously rejected early scripts that portrayed the Doctor as a stern, Sherlock Holmes-like figure, opting instead for a 'cosmic hobo' persona inspired by Charlie Chaplin.
Troughton’s Second Doctor was defined by a scruffy, oversized frock coat, baggy houndstooth trousers, and a signature recorder he used for both music and as a makeshift tool. His personality was a calculated mask; he played the fool to manipulate his enemies, all while retaining a sharp, hidden intelligence. This approach proved successful, as ratings actually increased during his tenure. He was often accompanied by Jamie McCrimmon, an 18th-century Scotsman who became his longest-serving companion, and later by the 21st-century astrophysicist Zoe Heriot.
The era was marked by a shift toward 'monster-heavy' storytelling and the popularization of the 'base under siege' motif, earning the Second Doctor the nickname 'the monster Doctor.' Unfortunately, the BBC’s practice of wiping tapes during the 1970s resulted in the loss of 53 of his 119 episodes. Despite this, his legacy remains profound. He is frequently cited as a favorite by later actors who took on the role, including Matt Smith, who drew inspiration from Troughton's iconic bowtie. Today, the character continues to live on through audio dramas and expanded universe media, including the popular fan-conceived 'Season 6B' theory, which suggests he served secret missions for the Time Lords before his eventual exile to Earth.
