From studio chance encounters to chart-topping anthems and solo reinvention
In short: Shaznay Lewis didn't start her career in a boardroom; she began with a simple introduction at a party. That single connection led to the formation of All Saints, a group that would define British pop while establishing Lewis as a powerhouse songwriter for some of the UK's biggest acts.
Lewis’s trajectory began in 1993 at the Metamorphosis recording studios on All Saints Road, London. After being introduced to Ben Volpeliere-Pierrot by friends, she started providing backing vocals and met Melanie Blatt. Together with Simone Rainford, they formed All Saints 1.9.7.5., which eventually became the iconic girl group All Saints after Rainford departed and Nicole and Natalie Appleton joined.
The group achieved massive commercial success in the late 1990s and early 2000s. More than 1.2 million units of "Never Ever" were purchased within the UK, one of three top-charting British hits co-authored by Lewis out of five total. Her songwriting prowess was formally recognized in 2001 when she won an Ivor Novello Award for best songwriting. Beyond her own group, she has contributed to tracks by Westlife, Stooshe, and even co-wrote the theme music for the Netflix series Turn Up Charlie with Idris Elba.
Following a solo debut in 2004—which included collaborations with producers like Basement Jaxx—Lewis transitioned into a period of consistent reunion cycles with All Saints. These reunions produced albums like Studio 1 (2006), Red Flag (2016), and Testament (2018). In 2024, Lewis marked a significant milestone by releasing "Miracle," her first solo single in twenty years. She described the track as a 'love song to myself,' reflecting on her identity over the past 25 years and her return to writing with renewed self-esteem.
