In short: As the largest and deepest of New York's Finger Lakes, Seneca Lake is a geological marvel formed by ancient glaciers. Beyond its reputation as a premier trout fishing destination and wine region, the lake is famous for mysterious booming sounds and a history of naval sonar testing in its depths.

Formed at least two million years ago by massive glaciers up to 3 kilometres thick, Seneca Lake is a defining feature of central New York. Stretching 38 miles long, it holds an estimated 3.81 cubic miles of water—roughly half the volume of the entire Finger Lakes chain. Its immense depth, reaching over 618 feet, keeps the bottom water at a near-constant 39 degrees Fahrenheit, preventing the lake from freezing over due to constant circular motion fed by underground springs.

The lake has long been associated with the 'Seneca Drums,' unexplained booming sounds that have been reported for over a century. While 1930s geologist Herman L. Fairchild proposed that escaping natural gas could be the cause, modern researchers are still investigating. Recent high-resolution surveys identified 144 large pockmarks on the lake floor. While methane was detected in 2025 samples, researchers found no evidence of continuous release, suggesting that gas might accumulate and discharge episodically, potentially creating these acoustic phenomena.

Seneca Lake’s unique environment has also served strategic purposes. The US Navy utilizes the lake's depth for sonar testing, including evaluating equipment for the USS Seawolf submarine. Historically, the region was home to the Seneca people until the 1779 Sullivan Expedition, and later became a hub for industrial and agricultural growth following the 1825 opening of the Erie Canal. Today, the lake supports a thriving viticulture industry, with the Seneca Lake American Viticultural Area established in 1988, alongside a popular fishing scene that draws anglers for species like lake trout and landlocked Atlantic salmon.
