Serei Saophoan: The Cambodian City With Three Names and a Hidden Mango Past
In short: Serei Saophoan is the capital of Banteay Meanchey Province, yet it is rarely known by its official administrative title. Whether you call it Sisophon, Svay, or its government-sanctioned name, this transit hub sits at the crossroads of Cambodia’s major highways, hiding a rich linguistic history beneath its modern, dusty surface.
The city of Serei Saophoan serves as a vital junction, separating National Highway 5 and National Highway 6. While the government officially designates the city as Serei Sophon, the name Sisophon remains the most common moniker. This version is a legacy of Thai rule, derived from the Sanskrit term Śrī Śobhana, which translates to beautiful, bright, or glorious. The name reflects the region's complex history, where administrative shifts and cultural influences have left multiple layers of identity on a single urban center.
Before it was known as Sisophon, the area was a simple village called Phum Svay, or village of mango trees. The term Svay, meaning mango tree, is also a common given name in the Cambodian countryside, leading to the alternative name Phum Ta Svay, or village of Grandfather Svay. Today, the name Svay persists as a nickname used primarily by truck drivers, train operators, and laborers. While the exact origin of this specific nickname remains a mystery, the old name survives in local hybrid usage like Svay-Sisophon and in the nearby hill known as Phnom Svay.
The city's growth has been modest compared to its neighbors. In the 1998 census, the population was 61,482, and by 2008, it had only shifted slightly to 61,631. During this period, the city was overtaken in size by Poipet. Despite its relatively static population, the area remains a gateway to historical wonders. Just forty minutes away lies Banteay Chmar, a Khmer Angkor temple complex constructed during the reign of Jayavarman VII between the late 12th and early 13th centuries, serving as a reminder of the deep historical roots that define the surrounding landscape.
